Dear DoctorHi Dr Kate,
I am 13 years old and I have had my period for almost a year and a half and my breasts still haven't grown. Is there something the matter with me? Plus, one breast is bigger than the other. I know that this is normal but it is really annoying! It's so hard shopping for bathing suits and cute shirts with a flat chest. Is there some kind of enhancement (not surgery) that I can use? I have a boyfriend and he keeps wanting to go up my shirt and I won't let him because it's too embarrassing being flat-chested and he couldn't feel anything if he did. Is there like a kind of food that I can eat or something? My friend said that if I eat vegetables then they would grow (and since I'm like a vegetarian I know that's not true) All I want is big boobs. My friends have big boobs and it seems that more guys notice them, and that lowers my self-esteem when I see that. I don't want to talk to my doctor about it because I hate her! I have always been wanting to talk to someone with my problems and I am happy that I have found you to talk to.
Alyssa
Dear Alyssa,
Firstly, be reassured that there is nothing wrong with you - the fact that you have your period means that it is unlikely that there is anything medically wrong. The second thing you should know is that breasts are great no matter what size or shape - I believe this and so do most of the guys I know! Although it's normal to compare yourself to others, breasts are not what makes you attractive or noticeable - this has more to do with your confidence in your own body. Instead of looking at the ways that small breasts are bad - look at the good side - I know many women who like having small breasts - or others that would prefer them over larger ones! In terms of building breasts up - a lot of people talk about doing exercises that build up your "pectorial" muscles - that lie underneath your breasts. This doesn't increase the breast size itself much - but by building up the muscles you can increase the size of your chest. The main thing to remember is that you are young and healthy and this is the time when you should enjoy the beauty you have.
