Sydney Aquarium's Japanese Spider Crab
Sydney Aquarium's largest resident Japanese Spider Crab - also known as the Crabzilla of the Sea -underwent its first measuring session since arriving at the attraction three months ago to star in the new exhibit, CLAWS.
With a leg span measuring in at 1.5 meters, the giant crab, affectionately known as Sake, has grown 15cm since its arrival, which is even more than the full size of its crustacean neighbour, the Red Bait Crab. The measuring session was undertaken by senior aquarists to ensure the crab is settling in well and growing at a healthy rate.
While the crabs are still considered juvenile, Sydney Aquarium experts expect further growth to occur, with the potential for them to reach their estimated leg span of up to four metres long - making them the largest-known crustaceans in the world.
"The Japanese Spider Crabs were hugely intriguing when they arrived at Sydney Aquarium three months ago, and given we have already noticed significant physical changes, we are excited to watch their growth over the next year," said Martin Garwood, Senior Aquarist at Sydney Aquarium.
"The Japanese Spider Crabs are a hugely exciting species of crab to have welcomed to the attraction and their significant progress highlights that they are comfortable and relaxed in their new home."
Sydney Aquarium's Japanese Spider Crabs sit amongst a variety of other unique crustaceans within the CLAWS exhibition including the Red Bait Crab and the Darwin Prawn whose claws change from blue to orange at different stages of growth. Other stars of the CLAWS exhibition include the Murray Crayfish and the Banded Coral Shrimp.
