Tayla Young Lorelai
North Queensland born, Brisbane based artist Tayla Young has been writing and performing breathtaking indie folk songs that stop you in your tracks for a few years now. Debuting her softly loaded sound – one that accentuates her own self-professed oversharing habit, but with the easy listening poeticism of Paul Kelly or Missy Higgins – Tayla revealed her first single 'Southbound' back in 2019. The young artist quickly followed it up with the stunning track 'Crime of Comparison' which has now clocked over 1.6 million streams on Spotify. Two years on from her most recent track 'With the Fire', Tayla Young is thrilled to unveil her most refined sound yet, on new single 'Lorelai'.
Out via Gyrostream, 'Lorelai' is at once wistful, dreamy, hopeful and tragically honest. Whilst staying true to Tayla's indie folk roots, the production here is more akin to such contemporaries as Gretta Ray and Spacey Jane, but also nods to the intricate pop tropes from the likes of Amy Shark or Thelma Plum. The flirtatious lyrics and buoyant instrumental backing reveal yet another side to Tayla Young's craft, leaning even further into the cruisey indie pop feel of her last release with a fully realised sound that is lush and inviting. Recorded and mixed by Mark Myers at Mountain Kauri Studio and mastered by William Bowden of King Willy Sound, 'Lorelai' effectively marries tropical sounds of electric guitar, upbeat drums and a driving bassline with Young's captivating vocals to convey a fun and familiar story of an aimless romance.
"Lorelai is a lot more light-hearted than what I usually write about. I wouldn't necessarily say it's about a one-night stand or casual hook up, there's a bit more to the story. But it's definitely about having very little expectation of somebody. It's basically just me trying to convince someone cool and uncomplicated that I'm cool and uncomplicated too, which is definitely a lie but one I probably believed at the time. We had a lot of house parties in 2020, which is how I imagine the context of the track, so I wanted the mix to sound fun and summery, like a Hottest 100 party type of vibe. I really like the bridge; the bridge is cool; I reckon I nailed It lyrically." – Tayla Young
Despite the setbacks experienced by most in 2020, as well as living overseas for the majority of 2019, Tayla has played a number of live performances since her first official release, most notably supporting beloved headliners Kim Churchill, Emily Wurramurra and more. Tayla's ability to write lyrics that are uncomplicated but rich with significance is accentuated in her live performances. As we slowly navigate our way back to normality, Tayla Young is excited to continue to captivate audiences with her laid-back charisma, unmistakable North Queensland inflection, and unstoppable love of storytelling.
