old school house music
onelove / The Prince of Wales (circa late 90s ->)
Melbourne's dance scene
Any party thrown by Peter 'Raff' and Frank Cotela (betterdays, onelove, Stereosonic, Solar..)
We guarantee you will listen to this CD with the fondest of memories?

Some of onelove's finest take a trip down memory lane?

That is the thing about onelove?you would often hear a tune there before anywhere else and even if it did end up crossing over, as much as we eventually got sick of it, we always associate them with where we heard them first? There are two things that I believe really keep onelove rocking DJ's who are passionate about the music they play and a collective of clubbers who are just as passionate about the music they hear. That is why onelove has, is, and will continue to be a great club - John Course

There is a certain electricity in the air when you play a record for the first time at onelove. Been some epic nights from Erick Morillo, Guetta & Sinclar plus the first time Falcon turned up with a computer and gave us 'So Much Love to give'. We have had some great success stories, like the first time Kaz came back after 'I Like The Way You Move' - but we all still played at the place we called home. Now... the Saturday night institution is still going strong. onelove- thanks for the the memories and here's to many more years ) - Grant Smillie

I was lucky enough to be brought on as a resident DJ when onelove started in Sydney a few years back, I was really excited to join the team as onelove in Melbourne had achieved legendary status around the rest of Australia's clubbing community. In what seems like a short few years, onelove Sydney has managed to establish itself as one of Sydney's craziest nights out, quite different to onelove in Melbourne but uniquely onelove in comparison to the other nights around Sydney - Matt Nugent

onelove the club, the brand, the record label, the lifestyle began way back in 2001 in Melbourne Australia. Sure this release is called "10 Years of onelove Anthems", but who's really counting the years? And besides, being a collection of 'classics', we'd have to go all the way back to the beginning to see how this little dirty pub disco grew into a globally recognized rocking lifestyle brand that operates everything from club nights, festivals, tours to numerous record labels.

Let's cue the music, and fade to scene and step into club land's star gate and wonder back to Melbourne sometime in the late 1990's. The joining of two, somewhat unlikely people is where onelove all began. Nightclub promoter and the man everyone 'knows' - Peter Raff, joins graphic design guru Frank Cotela, to create a uniquely Australian club brand that would revolutionise not only Melbourne's nightlife but the landscape of Australian club land.

Raff was a champion of Melbourne club land having worked with other previously iconic Melbourne club nights like "Insanity" at Chevron, Chasers, Redhead, Subway and the long running house music brand "Better Days." Already influential in visual marketing and the arts, Frank Cotela was associated with a multitude of design studios before setting up his own studio. Frank was a seminal part of Melbourne's dance music culture. He practically produced and designed every club flyer, poster, CD and any other visual output linked with dance music culture. Frank also had more of an underground clubbing edge after being associated with Melbourne's legendary "Razor" club, back in the late eighties. They might have come from different background, but when Frank and Raff came together they had all the right ingredients to create something really special.

During a conversation with some friends, Frank and Raff heard that the Prince of Wales Bandroom (yes its still a premium band/rock venue) in seaside St. Kilda, needed some sprucing up on its Saturday nights, where it operated as a club night. That's where our dynamic duo stepped in and took over the Prince Bandroom in mid 2001 and in enters our third member of the Onelove group - Dror Erez. He was an ex-Israeli commando (minus the ammunition), who ran the Prince. Together with Dror, Frank and Raff assembled a team of people who would help produce onelove's fantastic disco party atmosphere. James Eden, Julian Gerner and Rory Kent worked with Frank and Raff, each attracting a different and diverse social set of people who made up onelove's initial audience, all of which contributed in making a spectacular experience at The Prince on a Saturday night. No one was excluded, it didn't matter if you were freak, geek, straight, gay, sideways, young or old - when you walked into the Prince on a Saturday night everyone' was united by the 'love' in the room, I think you get the picture. This is where onelove ultimately began.

The first line-up of DJs included Gian, Simone, Peter MacNamara and John Course, who still resides as an onelove favourite today. Raff and Frank both agree that at the time of starting onelove, they were filling a much needed 'hole' in Melbourne's already strong club culture environment. They were the first club brand to package up clubbing and fashion as a truly unique lifestyle. Even though the soundtrack began with disco house, and the audience were dressed differently to today's crowd, onelove have always been early adopters, of both music and fashion, in a forever changing industry. Passion has motivated onelove from day one. Its audience craves the party the new music and the people who make it happen also share the same enthusiasm for the dance floor.

Music plays a huge role in club land. From which DJ is in the booth, to what track they play. onelove has always keenly focused on talent and their musical output. From disco house, electro clash, rock house, electro house or whatever-the-house-music you like, onelove have been there from the start. Well before audiences would stick mobile phones in DJs faces with silly typed out requests on a phone screen, onelove's DJs, both local and international have always been tastemakers of their time. We could start a long list of people who have played at onelove, but this would just take up too much space. Hence this release helps to present a small slice of the soundtrack that has been onelove.

Club nights come and go, the music and fashion changes quicker than a blink of the eye, but there's always been a constant in Australia's club land, and that's onelove. With club nights all over Australia and even international shows, Australia wide festivals (like Stereosonic and Solar) and record labels - onelove's commitment to club land is obvious. The best measure of success is time, and onelove have travelled and danced long and far since that opening night as a dirty little pub disco in 2001. The onelove journey is far from over and the music is only going to get louder. So, sorry to coin a clique but this one is still to be continued?

Interview with Peter Raff

What is your favourite track on the album?

Peter Raff: Kings Of Tomorrow - Finally, Martin Solveig - Rocking Music and Junior Jack - E Samba. I remember coming back from Ibiza and E Samba hadn't been played in Australia and I got the girls to play it at Prince and the crowd just went off.

Was it hard to combine 10 years of anthems onto three discs?

Peter Raff: Oh yeah! There are so many great tracks out there there are songs that always bring back a special time in the clubs and you always want to include more than you can.

We have been doing this for a long time and it was time for a classic CD. It is something great to have on the shelf at home, full of memories. A classic is a classic.

What memories does the CD bring back?

Peter Raff: I've been doing clubs for 20-25 years and this captures one section of my life, the great times in the clubs. I've met people from all walks of life throughout the clubs and it has been great to see young DJ's come through such as Kaz James, who is massive all over the world and with the Bodyrockers. As well as Grant Smillie, with TV Rock, I've known him since he was a young boy and it has been great to see him come up and become like a rock star. I'm proud of these people. Grant used to work for me as a promoter, when he was 18. Grant was a great promoter and he is a great self-promoter. I was always looking out for OneLove these guys are great.

What would be your perfect Saturday night?

Peter Raff: Um? I'd probably be at Prince, OneLove, at about 12pm for about two hours watching the whole world go by and having a few vodka apples.

Which tracks are guaranteed to get a party started?

Peter Raff: Our favourites right now are:
1. Martin Solveig & Dragonette "Boys & Girls"
2. Erick Morillo "I Get Lifted"
3. Reekay Garcia - our new Aussie star "Back To The Beat"

Do you have an all time favourite song?

Peter Raff: Blackbox "Right on time" - what a tune!

How did you go about choosing what songs should feature on this album?

Peter Raff: We are an awesome team of DJ's, promoters and punters who have all had input to this tracklist. We are asked the people on the www.onelove.com.au forums for their favourites. We got top 10 charts form a bunch of the DJ's over the years, and also asked all the promoters to give us their feedback. So what you end up with is the real club favourites from the club.

What's next for OneLove?

Peter Raff: Moving to the cross in Sydney, Stereosonic, Mobile Disco 2010 our end of year CD, and hopefully lots of sunshine!

Which DJ's should we look out for over the next few months?

Peter Raff: Cassian is one of my favourites right now. Andy Murphy is on a hot streak (#1 house DJ in Australia -ITM), and naturally all our resident DJ's.

What is a typical day like for you?

Peter Raff: I split my time between Bondi, Byron and Melbourne - so lots of the beach I guess. Stereosonic is pretty important right now. So I've never got spare moment to myself.
