Can you believe it's been two years since Breaking Dawn, the final book in the Twilight Saga, was published? Since then two films have been released, (with the third on its way in July) and Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart have become household names.
Now for the first time in two years, a brand new book by Stephenie Meyer has been announced. The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner: An Eclipse Novella will be publishing simultaneously worldwide on 5 June.
'But who is Bree Tanner?' I hear you ask.
Only very ardent Twilighters will remember Bree Tanner, who was introduced on page 504 of Eclipse and was killed nine pages later.
So here is a cheat sheet:
· She was part of the army of new-born vampires that Victoria created in Seattle to destroy Bella Swan. This army went on a rampage in Seattle, killing many under the guise of a serial killer. During the battle with Edward Cullen's family, she surrenders and is told that her life will be spared. Unfortunately for her, she's broken to Volturi's laws and the leader of them has other plans for Bree...
· This new book will explain everything that happened in Seattle during the making of the newborn vampire army
· The character Bree features in the upcoming movie Eclipse, released on 1 July. The actress who will play Bree is fifteen year old Canadian Jodelle Ferland, who has appeared in TV series such as Smallville and Dark Angel, as well as many feature films including Case 39 with Renee Zellweger, Wonderful World with Matthew Broderick and the lead role in Tideland . · Stephenie Meyer was originally going to include this back story in The Twilight Saga: The Official Guide, (which is confirmed for release later this year)
"This story was something that I worked on off and on for a while, just for fun, in between the times I was writing or editing other Twilight novels. Later, when the concept for The Twilight Saga: The Official Guide came up, I thought that might be a good place for Bree. Her story is a nice complement to Eclipse; it explains a lot of the things that Bella never knew.
At the same time, it came in handy for the Eclipse film. Melissa Rosenberg, the screenwriter, had a ton of questions about what exactly was going on in Seattle, how Victoria managed things, what Riley was like, etc. I let her read what I had then, and later gave the whole thing to the director, David Slade. David asked if Xavier, Bryce, and Jodelle (Riley, Victoria, and Bree) could read it as well, so all the parties involved would end up having a really strong foundation for their characters before the cameras started rolling. I was pleased that this side of the story would make it into the film and was looking forward to including it in the Guide." - Stephenie Meyer on www.stepheniemeyer.com
Review: WOW, what a wonderful insight into the minds of a newborn and their path of discovery. The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner takes us on Bree's short newborn journey and how she survives the chaos that Victoria has created. It also backtracks Victoria's ploting through Riley (her newborn vampire puppy) and an interesting spin on the Volturi. When Bree is befriend by Diego something changes in both of them and answers need to be found.Bree becomes a victim of circumstance again, readers can sympathise that at least her 'short second life' brought her the love, resolution & purpose she had been looking for in both lives, so you can't help but feel sorry for her and wish her she made a run while she could. While 'The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner' is only a short backstory into the Twilight Eclipse saga, it's definitely worthwhile. Enjoy Twilighters, I sure did! - Michelle Warmuz (Editor)
The book follows the last week of Bree Tanners undead life as a vampire. As we already know, Bree is a newborn in Victoria's army who surrenders at the end of Eclipse only to be left in the brutal hands of the Volturi.
This is the first new title from Stephenie Meyer in nearly two years. The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner is a novella told from the point of view of Bree, a character originally featured in Eclipse. "I'm as surprised as anyone about this novella" said Stephenie Meyer. "When I began working on it in 2005, it was simply a nexercise to help me examine the other side of Eclipse, which I was editing at the time. I thought it might end up as a short story that I could include on my website. Then, when work started on The Twilight Saga: The Official Guide, I thought the Guide would be a good fit for my Bree story. However, the story grew longer than I anticipated, until it was too long to fit into the Guide."
The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner is the riveting story of Bree Tanner, a newborn vampire first introduced in Eclipse, and the darker side of the world she inhabits. The novella chronicles the newborn vampire army's journey as they prepare to close in on Bella Swan and the Cullens, following their encounter to its unforgettable conclusion.
The character Bree not only features prominently in teh book Eclipse, but in the upcoming movie from Summit Entertainment. "Stephenie was gracious enough to let me read a draft of the novella while we were prepping the movie The Twilight Saga: Eclilpse," said Director David Slade. "I thoroughly enjoyed the story and it gave us great insight and inspired location choices and the tailoring of scenes. I think fans are going to love the fascinating details involved in the loves, fears and actions of an emerging vampire."
