Thredbo Opening Weekend

With temperatures dropping and scattered snow throughout the week, it's clear that winter is settling in at Thredbo, well ahead of opening weekend. The resort, which has seen up to 25cm of snow fall on the mountain since Saturday, will officially kick of its winter season on the Queen's Birthday long weekend (6th – 8th June) with a packed schedule of events, parties and celebrations.

Famous for its season opener, Thredbo's 2015 opening weekend schedule will not disappoint. Highlights include a free outdoor concert featuring The Preatures and Crooked Colours, hot pool parties, a spectacular fireworks display and the annual outdoor Thredbo Village Long Lunch.

In true Swedish après style, on Saturday afternoon guests can keep warm by diving straight off the mountain and into the Rekorderlig Sounds in the Snow poolside party. As part of a concert series taking place throughout the winter, Saturday will see guests enjoy a live free gig by electronic trio Crooked Colours, who have previously packed dancefloors at Parklife, Wonderland and St Jerome's Laneway festivals.

Headlining the weekend's entertainment will be Aussie group, The Preatures, who will take the stage at the free Corona Village Concert Series on Saturday night in Thredbo's Village Square.

Described as an exhilarating combination of rock and soul, The Preatures rose to fame with their single -Is This How You Feel?' making it to number nine in the Triple J Hottest 100. Sydney rockers, Red Wine Roses, will warm up The Preatures' crowd from 6:30pm, and for those kicking on after the gig, Thredbo's Schuss Bar and Keller Bar will be open until late.

A popular opening weekend staple, artist Kenji Ogawa will once again grace The Village Square on Saturday morning to create an awe-inspiring ice sculpture from 10am. Meanwhile, families with children are invited to play in Thredbo's free snow play area and join the famous Thredboland animals at the Kids Opening Party where children will enjoy Twinkle Toes dance classes, face painting, Snowy the Clown, the Thredbo Super Slide and an exhilarating fire show.

Rounding out an exciting opening weekend in Thredbo, the Mumm Long Lunch will line The Village Square on Sunday afternoon. With an Italian inspired cuisine served alongside flowing G.H. Mumm champagne in a picturesque outdoor alpine setting, each year this event proves to be evermore popular among guests.

After a big weekend of skiing, snowboarding, partying and dining, Thredbo will cater to those needing to unwind by kicking off the Recovery Party from 10am Monday at the Pub Bistro in the Thredbo Alpine Hotel.

Following an epic opening weekend, this winter at Thredbo it's all about getting everyday Australians and their families and friends to come down and enjoy the magic of snow – especially if it's their first time. A resort awarded1 for an exciting range of features, events and programs, Thredbo makes planning a snow holiday easy with packages and experiences tailored specifically to first-timers and families.
