Interview with Timomatic
Question: Can you tell us about Parachute?
Timomatic: I recorded the song, Parachute, when I was in LA in February. I recorded with Team Red who basically created Lady Gaga's first album along with Jennifer Lopez and Pitball songs. Team Red are amazing people and I had the pleasure of creating Parachute with them.
Parachute is a party anthem with soul; it's a romantic song that talks about the notion of having someone in your life that makes you feel so fearless that you're invincible – it's as if you could jump out of a plane without a parachute and it'd be okay because they're around.
Question: What was it like launching Parachute at the State Of Origin?
Timomatic: It was awesome, what an amazing experience. Launching Parachute at the State Of Origin was the biggest launch of my career in terms of a single and the atmosphere was crazy! It was a lot of fun.
Question: What inspires you when writing songs?
Timomatic: When writing I am inspired by past relationships and music; often someone will play a piece of music and that will inspire a notion or lyric.
I didn't write the song Parachute. The beauty of music is that you can be inspired by any environment that you're in as it can spark something within you that comes out in song.
Question:How do you go about singing and dancing, when on stage; do you find one more difficult than the other?
Timomatic: It's all about working at them, at the same time, to really make them seamless. It's about learning when to breathe, when to sing and when to dance and how to do it at the same time; it's a lot of rehearsal.
Question: You're one of the judges for Australia's Got Talent 2013, how did that come about?
Timomatic: A few months ago I received a call asking me to be a judge for Australia's Got Talent and I was pleasantly shocked! I was on the show a few years ago and I didn't win the show, I came third. It's a massive privilege and an honour to be a judge. I'm sitting next to amazing people and I am loving the opportunity.
Question: What approach, as a judge, are you taking?
Timomatic: We've started with the audition round and I'm being myself. I feel that as a judge I need to judge with what worked for me and that's honestly and encouragement as I believe they come hand in hand. I say what I really feel about something, even if it's not exactly what a contestant will like to hear at the same time it is encouraging knowing it's a special thing to be able to come out and perform in front of the crowd and four judges. We're not scary looking, we're good looking judges and that helps (laughs).
Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?
Timomatic: Probably live because when I record I envision how it's going to go live, that's all I do. Performing live allows me to see the song come full circle and I get to see the affect that it has on people and that's why I do it, to make people feel amazing!
Question: What/who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?
Timomatic: Michael Jackson, I remember watching his work and loving the way he combined dancing, singing and the whole production. The way I felt when I heard Michael Jackson tracks made me want to do something like that, I want to give that feeling to other people.
Question: What is the biggest challenge you have faced along the way to your musical success?
Timomatic: My biggest challenge is sustaining success; it is one thing to gain success with a single as Set It Off was really successful but to stay around is a challenge. I didn't want to become a one-hit-wonder and fade out with one single. The hardest thing and it still is, is to sustain and to keep success rising and growing.
Question: When working on a song, what's important for you?
Timomatic: Firstly what is important to me is if the song is noticeable, straight away; that is a big thing for me. I want people to know, when they hear the first few notes, and say -that's Parachute' or -that's Set It Off'. Also, how the song makes you feel and I know a good indication is that if the song makes me groove and dance then it's more likely to make other people dance too. I want to make sure that every track is from my soul and heart; whether it's recorded or written and recorded it has to be from a real place.
Question: What's a typical day like for you now?
Timomatic: Wow! There is no typical day anymore, every day is different. Today I have spent the day doing interviews, yesterday I was editing and putting the final touches on my music video and the day before I was performing on The Voice, it's a lot of different and amazing experiences which make it all come together for Parachute. Every day adds up to a beautiful moment and I work with an amazing team of people who make this success including my label, my music, Channel Nine and the agency. Everyone has been so supportive of me and I want to be the best I can be and I'll work hard at that.
Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?
Timomatic: I'd love to work with Beyoncé, even if the song never was released. I'd love to be able to absorb her magic and to just be around her, I would learn so much.
