Interview with Tina Arena

Question: Can you tell us about how your surprise Splendour performance came about?

Tina Arena: Client Liasion invited me to do a song with them on their debut album; we recorded that in Melbourne together last summer, it's called A Foreign Affair.

We were all really pleased with the results and wanted to perform it live. I was in Europe when they were performing live earlier in the year; with Splendour In The Grass, our schedules aligned and I thought why not?

Question: How far in advance was this surprise performance planned? Did you have time to rehearse, together?

Tina Arena: It was quite last minute or let's say organic (laughs). I arrived from Europe a few days before the festival and flew into the Gold Coast, the boys arranged for a white limousine to collect my manager and I from the airport (which was very embarrassing but funny) and we went to a farm near Byron and rehearsed just for a few hours. It was only three songs so not too much pressure: our collaboration, one song of mine and we did a cover of Teardrop by Womack & Womack which was the boy's idea - I love that song and had never performed it so it was a lot of fun.

Question: What drew you to Client Liaison, for the performance and feature vocals?

Tina Arena: I just like everything about them - their sound, their look, their attitude and their sense of humour… they quite unique. We just shot a music video for the song which was a lot of fun.

Question: Who else did you see whilst at Splendour? Any favourites?

Tina Arena: I didn't get to see a lot unfortunately. Peking Duk are fantastic!

Question: How does it feel to be introduced to a crowd of music lovers as 'the voice of our nation"?

Tina Arena: It was very nice; those boys are always having fun though so I'm not sure how serious they were being with that.

Question: Will we see you performance at another festival, in the near future?

Tina Arena: Yes absolutely. Watch this space.

Question: What should audiences expect from the upcoming Innocence To Understanding tour?

Tina Arena: A great night out. I want everyone to leave with a smile on their face. We're doing all the hits, some done a bit differently, a few surprises and songs I haven't done in a long time. The bands are exceptional, the lighting and production and fashion are great; I'm very excited about the show.

Question: Is this a tour suitable for new and forever fans?

Tina Arena: Of course, there is something for everyone! These will be my last concerts for a while so I'm going to make the most of it.

Question: How did you know it was time for a greatest hits national tour?

Tina Arena: That's a good question… this year is my 40th anniversary in entertainment as I started when I was 9; I think a 40th anniversary is a good time to do a Greatest Hits tour, right?

Question: Right! Have you changed as an artist over the past 40 years in the entertainment industry? How?

Tina Arena: Of course, I'd be concerned if I hadn't changed. I sing in other languages now, I'm stronger with my opinions, I take more risks, I'm more confident but not complacent.

Question: What have you been doing to prepare for the forthcoming Bigsound keynote?

Tina Arena: Observing for the past 40 years; I have been chatting with a few people to get their perspectives but I think instinctively I've picked up quite a bit of knowledge over the years and I'm looking forward to sharing my perspective.

Question: What advice do you have for young musicians aspiring to be successful?

Tina Arena: A few things: be in it for the right reasons (because you love the music not the fame), take risks, push yourself to improve your craft and have a good team around you and… try to have fun!
