Uptown Girl: The Cinema of Shirley Clarke

'Dancer, bride, runaway wife, radical filmmaker and pioneer – Shirley Clarke is one of the great undertold stories of American independent cinema.  A woman working in a predominately male world, she ran away to bohemia, hung out with the Beats and held to her own vision in triumph and defeat." - Manohla Dargis - New York Times

The Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) proudly presents the cinema of Academy®-Award winning independent American filmmaker Shirley Clarke. This Focus On season draws on the recent restorations of Clarke's features by Milestone Films and her short films by the Museum of Modern Art, and encapsulates the Beat era that Clarke became synonymous with. The season will screen from Tuesday 24 October through to Tuesday 5 November.
