Dr Girl/Dr Dejour Q&A

Dr Girl/Dr Dejour Q&A
Dear Dr Dejour,

I know I am meant to get discharge from my vagina, but lately it has been really smelly and a yellowy colour instead of white. The smell is very strong and I am embarrassed that maybe my friends at school can smell it. What should I do?

Signed Wet Pants.

Dear Miss Pants,

If you have a discharge that seems 'different' to you, it is worth having it checked out by a doctor. You can get various overgrowth situations even if you are not sexually active. While these are not serious, they are a nuisance and are easily treated. If you are sexually active it is even more important to have a sample of the discharge sent for assessment as genital tract infections are treatable and can block your tubes in the long run if not treated.

If you have not had sex and are adamant that you will not show this to any doctor, you could try some vinegar (normal household stuff) in a shallow bath and splashed in 'the area'. This changes the environment and may rectify the situation. On the whole though, abnormal discharge = see the doctor (bad news I know, but we are very used to this situation and do not find it horrible).

Regards,
Dr Dejour
