Dear DoctorHi Dr Kate,
Both my mum and older sister have spider and varicose veins on the back of their legs and most of the older women in my family do too. Is there any way to prevent me from getting them as they are really gross looking!?
Thanks,
Signed Vein Gurl
Dear Vein Gurl,
Varicose veins are a genetic thing - this doesn't mean that it will definitely affect you - but if your mum and sister do have them there is an increased chance of you getting them. What also brings on varicose veins is pregnancy, getting older, having a job where you stand a lot, and having a low fibre diet. The main things that you can do to prevent them are keeping an ideal weight, eating a high fibre diet and resting or wearing supportive stockings if you have a job where you stand a lot, or when you are pregnant.
