Alana McGaw has always been a driven individual. She started her career in dancing, teaching young students in the evening to supplement her earnings as a Hairdressing Assistant by day.
Alana quickly realised that despite her passion for dancing, it was Hairdressing that would allow her to not only express herself creatively, but had the potential to achieve her biggest dream in life – to travel and work overseas.
Knowing that her 20s would be the best years to see the world, Alana wanted to advance her career and become a full time Hairdresser as quickly as possible. Her options were to either go down a -slow track' and do a 3 to 4 year apprenticeship and study at TAFE, or look at intense courses at private colleges.
Looking at these options, Alana started feeling despondent. She thought the only way to become a Hairdresser realistically would be to do a drawn out and long apprenticeship, which would have taken her years. It also would have meant that her dream of working overseas would not happen any time soon.
One day, Alana was reading an article in her local paper about the Australasian College Broadway that offered world class Hairdressing courses. And it offered access to VET FEE-HELP.
Alana jumped at the opportunity and went in to see the College almost immediately. She was astounded by the facilities she saw and signed up to start her full time Hairdressing study in September 2009. Loving the course, Alana completed her training in just over a year.
Her brother was living in London, so it was the perfect time to take her finely tuned and job ready skills straight there! Within a week of arriving, Alana secured a job in Brighton on the South Coast of England, and after four months had another job offer in an up market salon in central London.
Alana did not look back, and whilst working in the UK, she travelled the whole of Europe to incredible cities such as Paris, Nice, Budapest, Amsterdam and many more.
Whilst working, the feedback she received from her employers was that her Australian hairdressing skills were second to none, giving the locals a real run for their money!
When Alana returned to Australia earlier this month, the first thing she did was get in touch with the College to thank them for everything they did in training her. She also said that if it weren't for the educators and VET FEE-HELP, she would have never had the chance to experience the whirlwind year that she will never forget.
As always, Alana is setting her sights on the next thing which will be to gain experience in the high end Sydney hairdressing market, and eventually open her own salon one day... which may incorporate a bit of dancing too!
