Wesley Black Red Interview

Wesley Black Red Interview

Wesley Black unveils aesthetic visuals for 'RED!'

There's no stopping Perth-based artist Wesley Black as he announces his newest single 'RED!' available now on all streaming platforms, alongside a complimentary music video.

Wesley Black still remains in the spotlight after his groundbreaking single 'The End' in early 2018 achieved over 14 thousand streams on Spotify and 27 thousand views on YouTube. 'Red!' marks the debut of a new sound that Wesley has been exploring since late 2018, a sound of which he hopes will engage live energy and set him apart from his peers in the new exciting landscape of Australian HipHop, a genre dubbed 'The New Wave'.

After finding the perfect mix and master compliments of Perth based engineer/producer Son J, the single showcases a heavy mix of electronic and trap elements alongside high energy vocals. His expression of art has a unique trademark and he wants to keep on delivering his pieces through his own lens.

Keeping the creative team local, Wesley enlisted popular Perth videographer JustPlay Media to help bring the single to life. Shot by JustPlay and edited by Wesley himself, the visuals portray a dark red theme throughout. Highlighting a rose as a knife and shadowy scenes, the music video plays out as a thriller type romance.

'RED!' will be followed by another single 'backLASH' that will feature And Beyond leading up to his first headline show in October.

Interview with Wesley Black

Question: How would you describe your music?

Wesley Black: Versatile and genuine; I try to range my music around all elements of my life and all of my emotions; songs like the end are more raw while songs like RED! show more character.

Question: Can you tell us about RED!?

Wesley Black: It covers my self-doubts and fear of releasing music. It shows antisocial and introverted thoughts from myself, but using music as a platform to tackle the issue.

Question: What motivates you most when writing music?

Wesley Black: Definitely film, after watching a film I either write stories, music videos or music and it comes a lot from the characters or narrative that I connect with.

Question: What was it like filming the music video for RED!?

Wesley Black: It was stressful, I put a lot of personal imagery, time and money to create some sort of reflection of RED! whether it be fear of commitment or becoming social.

Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?

Wesley Black: I have a lot of love for recording but live is another level. If the crowd is into it, nothing beats singing something you're passionate about and jumping around with people you love / that love you.

Question: What should we expect from your upcoming show?

Wesley Black: A lot of energy. The most I can give.

Question: Which is your favourite song to perform live and why?

Wesley Black: twoFACE is always fun, but something tells me RED! will be something else. Anything with a lot of energy, really.

Question: If you could have anyone, in the world, attend a show, who would it be?

Wesley Black: Honestly, just all my studiomate and mentor XIV; he always makes sure I take my music to the next level.

Question: Which music/artists are you currently listening to?

Wesley Black: A lot of The Prodigy actually; a lot of Roy Blair, Trippie Redd and Saba too.

Question: What or who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

Wesley Black: To be honest, it was a lot of nu-metal, it wasn't until a friend showed me Eminem and Kendrick Lamar that I got into rap.

Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Wesley Black: Roy Blair, Billy Corgan and Travis Scott are all amazing; but someone like Denzel Curry and I would make something really heavy, I feel.
