Starring the then little known Mel Gibson, this low budget box office smash also launched the career of director George Miller and would be followed up by three more sequels, (screening over the next three weeks at ACMI). Set in a post-apocalyptic lawless world, Mad Max can be credited for inventing a genre and opening up the global market for Australian films.

Bunkers, Brutalism, Bloodymindedness: Concrete Poetry

For the month of May, Open House Melbourne is paying homage to one of the most challenging architectural styles that exists today: brutalism. The Heritage Council of Victoria presents a BBC FOUR two-part documentary in which Jonathan Meades makes the case for 20th-century concrete Brutalist architecture in homage to a style that he sees as brave, bold and bloody-minded.
