The Indonesian community and the Immigration Museum invite all Victorians to meet the community and experience the richness of Indonesian music, food, dance, craft and traditions.

Victoria s Indonesian community numbers more than 12,500 and is also one of our fastest growing migrant groups, with a 14 per cent increase between 2001 and 2006. Indonesian Festa at the Immigration Museum offers the chance to learn more about the cultures and people of Indonesia, Australia s immediate northern neighbour.

Activities on the day will include:
-Music performances by groups including Melbourne Community Gamelan, Sixcomeling Band, Indomonashis Band and Permai Javanese Gamelan
-Traditional Indonesian foods
-Shadow puppetry (Wayang Kulit) performance
-Performances of colourful and intricate Indonesian regional dances, such as: the Peacock Dance of Java, the Sekarjagat and Belibis dances from Bali, the Saman Dance from Aceh, among many others
-Public workshops in Indonesian martial arts (Pencak Silat) and Angklung (a bamboo musical instrument)
-Demonstrations of the traditional Indonesian artforms, including batik painting and caricature
-Community information, Indonesian short films and displays

There is a long history of Indonesian people living and working in Australia, beginning around 1750 with expeditions of fisherman seeking trepang (edible sea slugs). Throughout the 19th century, Indonesians worked on pearl-luggers and sugar plantations. During WWII the government of what was then known as the Dutch East Indies relocated to Melbourne, bringing with them an estimated 10,000 Indonesian workers. Although most of these early arrivals eventually returned to Indonesia, some remained and others paved the way for improved understanding between Australians and their northern neighbours.

Between 1947 and 1956, only 140 Indonesians settled permanently in Australia, but as racial restrictions on Australian immigration eased, more Indonesians found a home here. By 1981 more than 3,000 Indonesians had come to settle or study, and today the community in Victoria numbers around 12,600 Indonesian-born Australians

A fancy camera is not necessary and students may use film or digital cameras. There are a lot of people out there who have fantastic cameras but end up setting them on automatic because they don't understand all the functions. In this course, students not only learn that some of these functions exist but also some fun creative techniques to make use of them,? says Gleisner.

Using the stunning natural surrounds of Centennial Park for inspiration and subject matter, Gleisner will teach students how to take photographs of people, flora, fauna and landscape. ?It?s about getting to know your camera and practising your skills in a relaxed and interactive atmosphere that is beautiful and accessible. People can ask questions as they?re taking photos in the Park,? says Gleisner.

A Sydney-based freelance photographer and teacher, Gleisner?s works have appeared in a number of local exhibitions, portraying local and international images, including Clovelly Artists 2008 (Gallery East), Sydney Now 2008 (Sydney Museum) and Sydney Life 2002/2007 (City of Sydney).

A truly international festival, Little Big Shots includes over 90 films from 25 countries as far-reaching as Russia to Argentina, Estonia to Bangladesh and Finland to South Africa. Festival director, Chloe Boulton believes, ?The festival is the perfect way for kids to see great stories from all over the world that would
never otherwise make it to Australia. The themes and ideas covered in the films are incredibly engaging and relevant to the lives of all children.?

The festival also features a 10-member children?s jury. On May 3, 2009 these children will come together to watch and vote on films in two categories: the best Australian adult-made film and the best Australian child-made film. The winning films will have the honour of being screened at the Little Big Shots launch on May 31, 2009 at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image.

The idea to stage a major Melbourne international children?s film festival was originally conceived by Media Giants in 2004. Five years later, Little Big Shots has become its very own not-for-profit organisation dedicated to enhancing the media literacy of young people, fostering children?s creativity and showcasing the very best in filmmaking for, by and about kids.

Little Big Shots is now Australia?s major stand-alone kids? film festival - a niche Australian event. With its focus on short films for kids plus plenty of competitions and opportunities for involvement, Little Big Shots is one of the year?s most exciting experiences for kids.

An Australia-wide tour follows and includes screenings at Warrnambool?s Fun4Kids Festival (June 28 ?July 5), the Adelaide Festival Centre (July 16 - 18), the Sydney Opera House (September 9 - 13) and Kyneton Town Hall (October 21).
