A competition in conjunction with Melbourne Museum's blockbuster exhibition A Day in Pompeii asked Melbournians to take photographs of what they think makes Melbourne Italian. The top entries go on display at the Museum until 25 October.

The Museum received nearly 200 entries that reveal the ways in which Italian culture is embedded in the rich fabric of Melbourne life through food and dining, design and language.

The winning photograph, 'Gelato' by Amy Calton of Northcote, captures a scene that is familiar to many Melburnians: people enjoying gelati in warm sunshine.

Italians have been part of Melburnian life since the early days of settlement. Hundreds were lured to Victoria in the 1850s gold rushes, and a century later, tens of thousands arrived in Melbourne to start a new life after World War II.

Today they are the second-largest immigrant community in Victoria after the English, with nearly one in ten Melburnians either born in Italy or having Italian parents.

Take a closer look at the impact of Italian culture on Melbourne at the exhibition.

Almost 2000 students from across Victoria will converge on Scienceworks to race solar-powered cars and boats in the 2009 Victorian Model Solar Vehicle Challenge held on October 17 and 18.

With the chance to compete at the National Finals in November, teams from up to 60 schools from across the state have spent months preparing their models for the annual competition.

The event, which began in 1990, encourages young people to explore the potential of solar energy through the construction of working models and boasts some of the finest achievements in technology and science of Victorian school children.

There are a number of categories listed for the day including student designed cars, kit cars and boats. The solar car models will compete on a specially built 100m figure 8 track, the kit cars in a 'pursuit' around an oval track and the solar boats will race in a purpose built 10-metre pool.

Climate Quilt Campaign

Booking:Climatequilt.org
Australian kids are sewing patches for a massive fabric quilt as part of a global campaign to help save the planet.

A not-for-profit initiative supported by environmental conscious organisations such as Green School Alliance and Habitat Heroes, the Climate Quilt Campaign unites children around the world, who are pledging to do their part to raise awareness about climate change.

Aussie kids are invited to make their own patches to form part of the quilt, which will represent Australian children at a United Nations summit on climate change in Copenhagen in December.

The Australian quilt will join with other segments representing children from around the world before the finished quilt is unveiled at the United Nations in New York on Earth Day next year (22 April, 2010).

Creating your 'Pledge Patch' is as simple as finding a 16.5cm square of recycled fabric, decorating it with beads and embroidery, using a fabric pen to write your pledge to protect the environment, and to add your name, age and location.

Completed patches can be sent to PO Box 2280, Caulfield Junction VIC 3161.
