World Wild Coast To Coast Interview

Jarrad Lee Jackson is the maverick behind World Wild – an Australian artist fusing a little bit of 80s funk with synth, pop and electronica to bring you the perfect soundtrack to lazy summers spent at the beach, catching waves and rays under the sun.

Jarrad draws an eclectic range of inspiration from the likes of Beastie Boys, George Michael and Duran Duran to produce tracks that are as captivating and curious as they are cool. With a sound reminiscent of other cult surf bands such as Wavves without as much of the angst, World Wild is one to watch this summer.

-Coast to Coast' is a nostalgic tribute to the 80s Californian skate and surf scene, accompanied of course with a super catchy synth track. So infectious it's one not to be missed performed in the flesh.

World Wild is signed to another emerging game changer – I Heard They Eat Cigarettes Records. With a vision to create a platform for progressive and experimental artists such as Jarrad to set the world ablaze with their music, this is also a debut for the label which has grown from the cult Melbourne street wear and nightlife scene.

Jarrad, former drummer from Epitaph punk band Dangerous! - will be launching 'Coast to Coast' as his debut single with I Heard They Eat Cigarettes Records at Yah Yah's in Melbourne on Friday the 26th December. With the festive season and the sweltering Australian summer in full swing, it's the perfect chance to grab some friends and a cold beer and get caught up in the hype that is World Wild.

Jarrad Lee Jackson: Electroclash that marries 1980s synth cheese with brattish punk vocals.

Question: What should we expect from the upcoming shows?

Jarrad Lee Jackson: Mathew Broderik, Josh Brolin, Christian Hosoi, Dante Basco .. They will all be there haha

Good grooves, hot shoes, cool beers, positive vibes, high fives and the freedom air of nostalgia.

Question: Do you write your own songs? What's your inspiration?

Jarrad Lee Jackson: It's crazy because I don't feel that I do write the songs, I put in the hours and I work my ass off but the songs come from somewhere else. The music I make feels built up from moments in my life where I have either stood in a shopping centre and stopped to listen, or at a water park or where ever It may be where I've had a moment of intense emotion stop me and tickle my spine. My main inspiration is the anxiety I suffer from when I'm not making music.

Question: What music/artists do you listen to when you are not playing your own?

Jarrad Lee Jackson: To me its not about the artist as much as it is about the song, I usually will listen to one song by an artist and then move to the next artist, like I'm in control of my own radio show. High rotation would include:
Blood Orange - Sutphin Boulevard
Bloc Party - Hunting For Witches
Blink 182 - Mutt
Van Halen - Panoma
Kiss - Sure Know Something
Fleetwood Mac - Dreams
Freeeze - I.O.U
Touch Sensitive - Pizza Guy
Chvrches - Mother We Share
Drake - Were Coming Home
Grand Master Flash - Beat Street
Midnight Star - The Midas Touch

Question: What's next? Tour/Album/Single?

Jarrad Lee Jackson: I'm going to be Touring as much as I can, releasing singles along the way and putting out an EP through I Heard They Eat Cigarettes Records.
Side A - Singles
Side B - B-Side funk

Question: Was there a moment you contemplated throwing in the towel?

Jarrad Lee Jackson: I know deep down that I will be making music forever, and that's not up to me.

Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?

Jarrad Lee Jackson: Recording to me is imagination, imagining images and scenes and trying to capture those with sounds. Playing live is reality and they both are so important to me but while I'm young I appreciate the live aspect of being a musician that tiny bit more.

Question: What/who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

Jarrad Lee Jackson: My Dad, he is crazy supportive. Introduced me to music, taught me the guitar, booked my first gigs, and here I am trying to work as hard for him as he did for me.

Question: What is the biggest challenge you have faced along the way to your musical success?

Jarrad Lee Jackson: I played drums in a band that signed a World Wide record deal and toured around the world, when that was falling apart so was my world and that was hard.

Question: What's a typical day like?

Jarrad Lee Jackson: I stay up late, when I hear the birds chirping and see the sun rising and I force myself to bed.

Question: What has been your favourite part of becoming a music artist?

Jarrad Lee Jackson: The adventure I have been on.

Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Jarrad Lee Jackson: Right now .. Dev Hynes.

Question: What is the story behind the band's name?

Jarrad Lee Jackson: There's no real story, it's more of a vision. An imaginary world stuck in the 80's, spinning like a record where everyone is dancing, wearing sunglasses even at night... there's blue skies every day, perfect waves, Testarossa leaning, skateboard thrashing, graffiti streaming, one piece wearing, high five slapping. Everyone's just kids man and everyone is positive and pushing each other to the next level, Nothing is lame, nothing is "wak" but everything is just RAD, there's universal peace and love and World Wild is the silhouette you see and hear playing in the sunset view .. Now spin that record.
