Dear Doctor

Please note: questions can not be answered personally.

Dear Mish,

Hi! I'm 17 years old and I have big boobs. The only problem is that I just recently lost a lot of weight. In return I have these big droopy boobs and I don't know what to do about them. Do you have any advice on how I can perk them up?

Sincerely, Helpless

Dear Helpless,

Losing weight can be a daunting enough task in itself, but when we are left with "sagging" body parts, that can be very frustrating.

Whenever I advise someone on losing weight I suggest they do it gradually as this will help with the "elasticity" of the skin. For example, as you are gradually losing weight the skin has time to adapt to your weight loss. If you have lost weight all of a sudden then the skin sometimes doesn't have time to adapt to the lost weight. Hopefully that makes sense to you.

In regard to your sagging breasts, I would suggest you take up some exercise. Go and join a gym and get one of the gym instructors to put together a program for you which will help firm up the chest area as well as your body overall. Underneath the skin on the chest area are muscles called Pectorals. If you work on toning and firming up these muscles this could help in "lifting" up your breasts.

If you don't think you want to go to a gym, then perhaps look at going to a personal trainer. Go with a couple of friends and make it a group training session if you are nervous about going - most trainers will happily provide this kind of service nowadays.

Good luck - I hope this helps.
