We welcome Emaline as this month's "Star of Tomorrow".Stage Name: Emaline Delapaix
Age: 25
Location: Melbourne, Australia
Music Genre: Eclectic folk pop with a bit of everything else thrown in, depending what mood I am in.
When did you realise that music was your passion? At 3 years of age. I was obsessed with Stevie Wonder and wanted to be exactly like Olivia Newton John - a scary thought I know!
List three musical influences: Kate Bush, Bjork & Neil Finn
How many years have you been performing? About 18 months professionally
Do you write your own material? Yes nearly all of it. I have recently co-written two songs with my guitarist and would like to do more when I get the time as the mixing of two writers ideas can be pretty exciting.
Have you found the Internet to be helpful/useful in fast-tracking your music career? Extremely helpful. If it wasn't for mp3.com so many people overseas would not have heard of me. I used the Internet to research and put together my first US/Canadian tour last year and this year I have done the same thing and will be touring the US/Canada again with some European shows thrown in.
In following your dream, who has helped you along the way? Fellow musicians who have believed in my music, as well as friends and family who didn't give up on me even when the times were tough.
Is there anything you wish you could change about the music industry? This need for musicians to keep useful information to themselves. Being an independent artist I believe we should help each other out as much as possible because it's really a tough industry where probably less than 2% of us are going to make a living from it. Many people seem so afraid that the next person is going to succeed and that they won't so it gets really competitive. I think that's a really destructive and stupid attitude to have.
I began running a women's music series two years ago called 'Venus Rising' and believe that in my own small way I have helped promote female performers by putting in my time, ideas and hard work. The rewards for sharing my skills and hard work have been the many important contacts and friends that I have made who have also shared useful information about the industry with me. I believe you get back what you put in.
What advice can you offer to other budding young artists? Don't be afraid to make mistakes, in fact I advise to make many, it's the only way to learn and grow. Also don't be afraid to dream and aim high. When I first got my band together two years ago I told them at one of our first band meetings that we would be touring North America within a year. They all thought I was crazy and yet 12 months later there we were on a plane to New York City with 24 shows booked in 31 days.
Where do you envision yourself in 5 years time? Touring 6 months a year and writing music for films, while the other 6 I spend in my quiet cottage on a property somewhere beautiful in Victoria. I also want to spend some time doing volunteer work with abused children and neglected animals and set up some sort of organisation to help both of these causes.
