His third album Bobby went platinum producing hits such as Humpin Around and Good Enough. He has since released a fourth album titled Bobby II and has featured on Ja Rules The Last Temptation album, Damian Marley's Welcome to Jamrock and, in 2010, recorded with Macy Gray on The Sellout album. He is also the ex-husband of R&B singer Whitney Houston.
Hit American R&B group, New Edition shot to worldwide superstardom in the 80s as the first boy band to make the genre of New Jack Swing - a fusion of R&B and hip-hop - popular. The band released their first album Candy Girl in 1983. The title track went to number one on both the American R&B singles chart and the UK singles chart and shot the group to instant success. Their second self-titled album brought hits like Cool It Now and Mr. Telephone Man which sold double platinum and the following Heart Break album resulted in five hit singles including If It Isn't Love and You're Not My Kind of Girl.
Home Again (1996) - New Edition's first new album in eight years - debuted at number one on both the Billboard 200 and R&B Albums chart, and became the most commercially successful album of the group's career producing the top ten hits Hit Me Off and I'm Still In Love With You. In total, New Edition produced seven studio albums, countless chart hits and inspired a whole generation of boy bands.
When Bobby Brown departed from New Edition in 1985, the group recruited singer Johnny Gill. His 1984 duet with Stacy Lattisaw, Perfect Combination, went top 10 and with the help of producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis he gained a number one hit for the R&B track Sensitivity. Gill's own 1990 self-titled solo album sold over one million copies giving him an array of his hits such as Rub you the Right Way (which appears in the videogame Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas), My, My, My, Wrap My Body Tight, A Cute Sweet Love Addiction and It's Your Body. In 1996 Gill released Let's Get the Mood Right, which includes the songs Love In An Elevator and Maybe, and the following year collaborated with Gerald Levert and Keith Sweat to form LSG. The result was the multi platinum debut album, Levert-Sweat-Gill and follow-up 2003 album titled LSG2. With over 80 television and film appearances Gill has also earned acclaim as an actor particularly for his cameo role on the hit TV show Family Matters and more recently singing You For Me in the movie Madea's Family Reunion.
Ralph Tresvant led New Edition from 1983 to 1989. In 1990 his self-titled platinum-selling album scored two more hits with Stone Cold Gentlemen and Do What I Gotta Do. Tresvant appeared in the movie House Party 2 in 1991 and the following year scored his fourth hit with Money Can't Buy You Love from the Mo Money soundtrack.
