February 14, 2018 is Heartkids Sweetheart Day, a national awareness campaign where all Australians can show their support for the tens of thousands affected by congenital/childhood heart disease.
Congenital/childhood heart disease is the leading cause of death of Australian babies under 12 months of age and the most common birth abnormality affecting one in every 100 births. Every day, eight babies are born with congenital/childhood heart disease and sadly, four lives are lost each week. There is no known cure.
Through public donations, Heartkids is hoping to raise $704,000 to expand its specialised family support services that are not government funded, and yet are a lifeline for the thousands of families that turn to Heartkids each year for assistance during incredibly difficult times.
