Indigenous Literacy Day

Indigenous Literacy Day

In 2004, the Riverbend Readers Challenge (launched by Suzy Wilson) gifted 120 books to three communities with the aim of boosting literacy levels. In 2011 we became the Indigenous Literacy Foundation with the support of the Fred Hollows Foundation. Eight years later, we have gifted over 260,000 books to 250 remote communities; published over 80 community stories that reflect 15 Indigenous languages, and built a community-driven early-literacy program in over 20 communities.

But there's a long way to go ... Did you know only 35% of Indigenous children in Year 5 living in very remote NT communities can read, compared to 95% of children living in major cities?

Today is INDIGENOUS LITERACY DAY. A day when we recognise the power of literacy to change lives; to open a door to choice and opportunity for children living in remote Australia where there are huge challenges.

Today we invite you to help us change the status quo and help us reach a milestone. This Indigenous Literacy Day we are aiming to raise $300,000 to buy 30,000 new and culturally appropriate books for children living in the most remote and isolated parts of Australia. We know that the books we gift are having a real impact. You simply can;t learn to read if you have no books.  Please support us by making a donation on our Fill a Bookshelf Campaign here.
