Teens will get up close and personal with artworks by Frida Kahlo, Georgia O'Keeffe, Camille Henrot and Vincent van Gogh at the next NGV Teens Art Party. Hosted by Australian Paralympic gold medallist Dylan Alcott OAM and featuring Melbourne's DJ Small FRY, this action packed teen-only event offers teenagers aged 13 - 17 exclusive after-hours access to MoMA at NGV: 130 Years of Modern and Contemporary Art.
Highlights of the night include New York City-inspired doughnuts by 17-year old entrepreneur Morgan Hipworth, owner of Windsor donut store Bistro Morgan. Hipworth will also share personal experiences of his meteoric rise to success. Alcott OAM will host a live talk, discussing the perceptions of disability in society and how teenagers can be part of its normalisation in everyday life.
Further highlights include Art Battle, an art making activity where participants will race against the clock on stage to show off their skills and draw their own masterpieces. Taking inspiration from artworks in MoMA at NGV, including the Portrait of Joseph Roulin by Vincent van Gogh and Self-portrait with cropped hair by Frida Kahlo, the winners will receive prize packs from the NGV design store.
Tony Ellwood AM, Director, NGV said, 'The Teen Art Party is a key event on the social calendar of many teens throughout the state and this invaluable experience offers them the unique opportunity to view some of the most renowned artworks from New York's Museum of Modern Art right here in Melbourne.
The continued success of the Teen Art Party, which is now in its sixth year and has welcomed nearly 6,000 guests, highlights that the NGV is a vital and necessary civic space for young people to foster their creativity and self expression while connecting with likeminded peers.'
The NGV Teens Art Party has been created with the input of the NGV Teen Council, a group of 11 teenagers who volunteer their time to learn about the inner workings of the gallery and support teen initiatives such as the Teen Art Party.
2018 Teen Council member Charlotte, 16 said that 'The Art Party is such a fun and relaxing space for teenagers to be in. You get to see the major exhibition on display, have great food and listen to good music all while meeting new people and building new relationships. It's an incredible celebration of art, culture and diversity, and we're so lucky to have this event right here in Melbourne.'
The NGV Teens Art Party will be held at NGV International, 180 St Kilda Road, Melbourne, Australia on Saturday 22 September from 6 – 9pm. Tickets are avaliable for students aged 13 – 17 with valid secondary school ID. More information is available from the NGV website NGV.MELBOURNE.
