Nicola Schultz Union

Union: An intimate portrayal of loss and hope

With Union, Nicola Schultz's emotionally rich and evocative vocals are complemented by guitars, and a mix of electronic and organic accompaniments.

Union marks the arrival of the first full length album for Nicolas Schultz since her departure from Australian Indi pop band, Swirl- who in the words of Drum Media rock reviewer Mark Neilsen, were criminally underrated. They played at CMJ College Music Seminar in New York, and were acknowledges as "one of the buzz bands". They also received widespread US college radio airplay. In Australia, they supported international acts My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Ned's Atomic Dustbin, and The Lemonheads, played the Big Day Out and toured withy a heap of local bands.

Nicola Shultz released a 5-track EP entitled Searching for the Goddess in 2008. In the same year, her photography was included in ArtGroupie, an exhibition of artworks by 29 Musicians, Producers and DJ's who also make visual art, as part of the ANODE festival, and included works by well known musicians, Steve Kilbey (The Church), Mick Turner (Dirty Three) and Ben Ely (Regurgitator). An accompanying CD set contained tacks by all the exhibiting artists, and Shih, the single from Nicola's EP was included.

Review: Nicola Schultz's genre can be described as alternative pop similar to that of Joni Mitchell or Bjork. Nicola successfully enhances her instrumental music with her edgy and upbeat vocals creating an enjoyable soulful mixture. I suggest you skip the first eight tracks and head to track nine, Jacqueline- it's amazing!
