Pieces

A six-show season of performances this December will celebrate risk and experimentation, as the next generation of Melbourne's dance-makers present their latest works in a not-to-be-missed triple bill.

PIECES, co-produced by Lucy Guerin Inc and The SUBSTATION, sees these two regular champions of local independent artists present three of Melbourne's most exciting young choreographers, premiering bold new works from Sarah Aiken, Siobhan McKenna and Geoffrey Watson. Tickets are now on sale, with six shows between 6th and 13th December.

"Looking forward to this program at The SUBSTATION and the energy of risk, imagination and experimentation that these dance-makers will bring to PIECES. These artists are the future of dance and I'm excited to see where they take us." – Lucy Guerin.

PIECES is an evolution of Lucy Guerin Inc's Pieces for Small Spaces program, which has supported up to five emerging choreographers annually since 2005 to create and present short works (up to 10 minutes) in a performance season hosted at the Company's studio. The program's aim has always been to provide an environment and resources for artists to challenge their regular practice and execute their most daring ideas.

This ethos continues into the new, expanded format. In 2019, PIECES enables three choreographers, curated by Lucy Guerin (Artistic Director of Lucy Guerin Inc) and Brad Spolding (Director of The Substation), to develop a more ambitious idea, creating and presenting a new work of up to 30 minutes with production support at the Substation.

The creation of these new works will take place at WXYZ Studios, Lucy Guerin Inc's studios in North Melbourne, where the artists will also receive artistic mentoring from Guerin, Spolding and Lucy Guerin Inc's Resident Director, Alisdair Macindoe.

PIECES is a co-production of Lucy Guerin Inc and The Substation, supported by the Angior Family Foundation. Lucy Guerin Inc has also been supported by Creative Victoria, the City of Melbourne and the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.

"On relocating to Melbourne years ago, I interned for LGI when Pieces for Small Spaces began and have seen almost all of the Annual Season's since its inception. I have seen the amazing works and artistic risks that resulted from this incredible, long running program. In the next step in the evolution of this program, The SUBSTATION is proud to partner with LGI to deliver the new PIECES program, supporting new artistic voices in our grand and unique space." – Brad Spolding.
