Starlight and Spaceflight school holiday fun at Scienceworks

This autumn celebrate the International Year of Astronomy by going on a journey through outer space as part of Scienceworks' school holiday activities, from 4 to 19 April 2009.

Newest exhibition
Experience the latest Scienceworks exhibition Earth Quest - Outer Space to Inner Earth and take off on an intergalactic journey from the outer limits of the Solar System all the way to the very centre of the Earth. Learn about our fascinating planet through more than 30 interactive exhibits ranging from astronomy, geology and geography to environmental science and biology.

New Lightning Room show
The new Amps, Arcs and Sparks show will be showing in the Lightning Room. Find out how sound travels, how an electric guitar works and how we can predict the distance of an approaching lightning storm in this 30 minute electrifying show starring sound waves and live lightning bolts. Be sure to catch it at 11am, 12pm, 2pm & 3pm.

Melbourne Planetarium
Planetarium shows, including Tycho to the Moon, Stories in the Stars and The Search for Life: Are we Alone? will also be showing daily.

Holiday activities and performances at Scienceworks include:

Luna Lift-off
3.. 2.. 1.. Lift-off! Destination: the Moon. How are we going to get there? What would it be like to stand on? Find out about rockets and the Moon in this 20 minute live show.
Time: 1pm

Marvellous Meteorites
Find out the difference between a meteoroid, meteorite and meteor. Hold a meteorite from our collection and touch the 680kg Cranbourne meteorite in this five minute demonstration.
Time: 11.45am

Learn about our Universe
Sit and relax while you learn all about Earth's place in outer space with this engaging audiovisual presentation for the whole family.
Time: Daily

Lights, Mirrors, Action!
Have fun with the fastest thing in the universe, as you bounce light to reach your target, in this illuminating 30 minute hands-on science workshop. Numbers are limited, book on arrival.
Time: 11.15am, 12.15pm & 2.15pm

Cosmic Colours
Did you know that stars can be different colours? Make your very own swinging star mobile to take home and learn about some of the brightest stars in our sky.Time: Daily

International Year of Astronomy
The International Year of Astronomy is a global celebration. It aims to reconnect people with the night sky and highlight the contributions astronomy has made to our society and culture. The year marks the 400th anniversary of Galileo turning a telescope to the sky. Scienceworks will be celebrating with a number of special events and activities throughout the year. 100 Hours of Astronomy
Take part in the International Year of Astronomy here at Scienceworks. All around the world, across six continents, people will be participating in 100 hours of Astronomy by looking through telescopes. You can join in by using a special solar telescope to look at the surface of the Sun, and have your astronomy questions answered in a Q&A session with Dr Tanya Hill, Museum Victoria's own astronomer.

Galileo Showcase & From Earth to the Universe display
In 1609, Galileo Galilei first turned his telescope to the sky. The observations he made left a lasting impression on society and changed our view of the Universe forever. In the planetarium foyer you can see a replica of the telescope used by Galileo, alongside From Earth to the Universe astronomy images projected on the big screen.
