Legendary Australian slide guitarist and music producer Dom Turner (of awarded blues act 'Backsliders" fame) has collaborated with Ohio based Sacred Steel act Nikki and the Browns on a new mini-album 'Sliding Steel". They have also announced an Australian East Coast tour commencing in May.
Recorded in Toledo, Ohio in August last year, the mini-album crosses Southern US Church music with soul, funk and blues and is the first in a series of four original cross-cultural collaborative projects under the title 'Microtonal Crossroads".
Hailing from Toledo, Ohio, Nikki Brown was born into a Church-based slide guitar tradition known as Sacred Steel and learnt from renowned steel guitar master, Del Grace. She has been described by Guitar World as the 'Jimi Hendrix of Sacred Steel" and is an electric lap steel guitar phenomenon. Her powerful vocals and performance has developed over a lifetime of gospel singing, resulting in a powerfully rich, raspy soul-gospel vocal style delivered with impeccable flare and flamboyancy. Joining Dom and Nikki are her sisters Gloria (rhythm guitar and vocals) and Belinda (bass guitar and vocals) and cousin Tomika (drums and vocals) who share the same deep musical heritage and love of infectious gospel-soul funk- blues music.
'Sliding Steel" demonstrates the magic that happens when two like minded slide guitar enthusiasts collaborate on a project to produce a gospel-soul, guitar infused, funk-blues record.
