Singer-songwriter Missy Higgins says she's never felt more vulnerable in her life.
As one of Australia's most accomplished female artists, Missy Higgins opens up in an intimate episode of Australian Story, as she retraces her rise to the top and reveals the emotional turmoil that's defined her past couple of years.
"I'm definitely not pretending to have any of the answers, or to be strong or to even like myself much at the moment," Missy told Australian Story.
Missy burst onto Australia's music scene in 2001, winning triple j's Unearthed while still in Year 12.
Her debut album The Sound of White remains one of Australia's biggest selling albums, and its songs have guided many fans through the ups and downs of their formative years.
Twenty years later, and with a new album, Missy is picking herself up after a bruising divorce.
"We've all written such strong narratives for ourselves, and then you come to a point in your life where it's like, actually that's not your narrative anymore, that's burned to the ground."
In her darkest hour, she did what she's always done, poured her heart out into her music and this time she "didn't hold back."
As her mother Margaret Higgins said, it's like having a diary "except that in Missy's case, everybody gets to read it."
