Kid's Flick: The Lion King 3D

Screen It 2011

School-aged film makers from around the country have exercised their creativity to create films around this year's theme, Respect, intended as a trigger for students and teachers to investigate topical issues while learning filmmaking techniques along the way.

The 2011 competition set a new record for the number of entries, doubling from the previous year with 499 submissions nationwide across the categories live-action films, computer games and animations.

Entries represented diverse parts of Australia - from Glencoe in South Australia to Indooroopilly in Queensland; Wynyard in Tasmania to Cabramatta in New South Wales; Peppermint Grove in Western Australia to Sunbury in Victoria. Consistent with previous years, Primary Animation was the most popular category demonstrating a great ability among Australian primary students to harness technology. For older students, the most entered category remains Secondary Live Action. Several schools which made the finalist stage in previous years have also made finalist status in the 2011 competition.

Watch Tiddalik the Thirsty Frog, a Victorian Aboriginal creation story, come to life, meet some real native Victorian frogs and create a frog mask to wear.

Live performance: Tiddalik the Thirsty Frog
Laugh, dance and sing along with Tiddalik the Thirsty Frog! Tiddalik is a Victorian Aboriginal creation story belonging to the Gunai people of Gippsland. The story follows the thirst of a small frog whose greed has him drinking all of the world's water, leaving all the animals and plants thirsty and withering. How will the animals force Tiddalik to return the water? A wise old wombat suggests that if they can make the giant, bloated frog laugh he will spill out all of the water. Will the animals make Tiddalik laugh?
This performance is presented in collaboration with Ilbijerri Theatre Company.

Exhibition: Our Children Our Future
Our Children Our Future is an exhibition by Koorie children and youth that celebrates the strength, diversity and vibrancy of Victorian Aboriginal culture. It is the result of a collaborative project between the Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency (VACCA), Aboriginal Elders, artists and community members from across the state. VACCA provide a series of creative workshops for Koorie children to spend time with Elders, artists and community members to learn about their culture and interpret them through song, dance and visual art. Many of the children's achievements from the workshops are on display in Our Children Our Future.

NASA Astronaut launches Star Voyager exhibition

Star Voyager includes rare films and documentary footage, video artworks, television clips, animations, as well as film ephemera such as models, costumes and production materials, to reveal the relationship between the moving image and space. The exhibition features a space-flown camera from NASA's Apollo 12 mission film costumes and models from 2001:A Space Odyssey (1968), Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999), Sunshine (2007) and Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), as well references of space in popular culture such as music video clips.

The Star Prepares To Shine

The Star will throw open the doors to its gleaming new expansion, that will include 20 new restaurants and bars, and a sophisticated retail area including a collection of leading luxury brands. The entire façade of The Star has been re-orientated to face the harbour and is set on an open promenade lining Sydney's waterfront.

The first restaurants set to open are Chef Stefano Manfredi's Balla and chef Teage Ezard's BLACK by ezard which open to the public from Friday 16 September, as well as a new harbour facing cocktail bar, Cherry. From mid-October 2011, The Star will also become home to David Chang's Momofuku Seiōbo, Chase Kojima's Sokyo, Sydney's Cantonese institution Golden Century, Adriano Zumbo's new patisserie and takeaway eatery Flying Fish and Chips.

The Search for Harry Potter's Biggest Fan

To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the publication of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone Bloomsbury is launching a competition to find the biggest Harry Potter fan in Australia and New Zealand.

Bloomsbury is inviting fans to write a letter of no more than 50 words explaining why they love Harry Potter. We are looking for the most creative, clever and entertaining reasons and, while the word limit is set to a strict 50 words, entrants are encouraged to draw, doodle and make their letters as elaborate as possible.

Harry Potter fans can only enter by visiting a local bookshop and posting their letter in the specially designed postboxes. Over 400 bookshops have already signed up to take part. The competition will run from Tuesday 26th June to Tuesday 31st July 2012 after which we will name the biggest HHarry Potter fan in Australia and New Zealand. The winner and runners up will be announced on Saturday 1st September.

The Hamilton Sheepvention show is on again next weekend - a fantastic event in the Grampians region. It is all about sheep (as the name suggests!) and celebrates the diversity and history of the animal in Australia. Victorian school students are set to learn about space travel and exploration from a NASA astronaut in a special education program by the Australian Centre for the Moving Image.

NASA Astronaut Rex Walheim will visit ACMI and host a special education program for Victorian schools, scheduled to coincide with the launch of the centres new major exhibition Star Voyager: Exploring Space on Screen. The education event, Blast Off with NASA Astronaut Rex Walheim, will be held on Thursday 22 September from noon.

ACMI's Studio 1 will become a classroom with a difference for a live audience of 50 students and the event will also be beamed to all Victorian schools via the Department of Education's online Virtual Conference Centre (VCC). Thirty-two Victorian schools have already registered to take part.

Charles Dickens 200th Anniversary
