Warming up for Winter Comfort food without the calories

Warming up for Winter Comfort food without the calories

As winter sets in, so does the desire to curl up and munch on foods that are hearty, filling and high in kilojoules. By swapping comfort foods for low-fat egg recipes you'll feel satisfied without over-doing the kilojoules, and this nutritionally rich food will help your body fight off colds and flu all through winter!

In order to resist the temptation to fill up on fattening 'comfort foods' the Australian Egg Corporation has asked Australia's favourite family chef, Geoff Jansz, to devise some delicious low-fat winter-warming recipes with all the flavour that you crave, minus the kilojoules.

Geoff's latest egg recipes are quick and convenient, full of protein and vitamin rich to keep you comforted over the cooler months.

"Winter is a great time to experiment with rich, spicy flavours. My delicious Delicatessen Eggs are a perfect start to a chilly winter morning. They are so quick and easy to make and keep me satisfied right up to lunch time," said Geoff.

"And for those nippy winter nights, nothing can beat my poached eggs with Sicilian Caponata - who said poached eggs are just for breakfast! Bursting with Italian flavours, this is a dish my entire family enjoys and tastes fantastic the next day as well."

One of Australia's leading dietitians, Sharon Natoli from Food & Nutrition Australia, recommends eggs as a nutritious food to enjoy through the cooler months as we start to crave satisfying hot meals. Eggs contain 18 different vitamins and minerals, some of which help stave off the colds and flu that come with the season.

"Eggs are high in Vitamin A and provide useful amounts of zinc, both of which keep us powering through the winter days and protect our body from infection," said Sharon.

Eggs provide the best quality protein of all food sources, and protein rich foods have been shown to increase the satiety hormones that cause you to feel fuller for longer - just the thing to crush those winter cravings!
