Can Colour Affect Our Emotions?

-Written by Katie Day

Different colours have long symbolised different objects or emotions. At the same time, studies have shown that colours have different psychological effects on people. Whatever the occasion, you may wish to wear a certain colour or colour combination in order to create an impact, make a statement or change your emotional state.

Red is a great colour for creating a reaction! It represents fire and passion. If you want to be controversial, introduce a block of red into a business outfit, it will create drama and impact. But, be careful, it may attract an unwelcome reaction from the people looking at you! They may see you as being aggressive, so ensure your body language communicates your passion and spirit – not anger! This is the perfect colour if you are feeling low on energy as it fires up the emotions and gets you going. If wearing red where it is visible isn't appropriate – get some red knickers!

Pink and Peach are less -in your face' than red, and can verge from the palest hint of colour to the strongest tones of Fuchsia, Magenta and Terracotta. Bold blocks of these colours can help create drama in an outfit, get you noticed but without the potential controversy of red. Make sure you know the density of colour that best suit your skin tone, otherwise these shades could wash you out rather than bring you alive.

Orange represents sunlight and is therefore a happy and lively colour. It can make the most serious outfit buzz with vitality and energy and lift the spirits of everyone around you. Know how much you can wear close to your face; keep to accessories and make-up if you are unsure. And, no, orange doesn't look brilliant with black – team it with dark brown, dark blue, pine green, turquoise or mustard instead and create subtlety with power.

Yellow is like standing outside on a hot, sunny day and basking in radiance and warmth. It can create the same feeling if you wear it or if you look at someone else wearing it. You will be approachable, look happy and draw people to you automatically. Try wearing yellow and not smiling! It's hard, trust me, I've tried. And if you are smiling, people around you will be. Great for lifting your spirits if you're low on energy and enthusiasm.

Green creates a feeling of stability, balance, naturalness and tranquillity. When used near your face, green can also create tension and drama. As one of the neutrals in the colour palette, green is a fabulously versatile colour which enables you to team it with virtually any other colour and create subtle illusions right through to dramatic impacts.

Blue represents the sky and water. The light blues are calming, while the dark blues such as navy, give off a feeling of power and authority. This colour ranges from the palest sky blue to the deepest midnight blue, verging on black and from the sharpness and brilliance of sapphire to the intoxicating hues of turquoise, teal and kingfisher. Experiment with the wonderful complexity of this colour and team it up with other strong colours to create drama and excitement. Blue is a perfect colour to wear near your face if you have to give a public speech and it draws people to power of communication.

Purple stands for the mystical, sensitivity, uniqueness and artistry. In ancient times, it suggested wealth and royalty because as a dye, it was rare and expensive to produce. It is still used today in the highest echelons of Royalty, The Law, The Church. It is the colour of magic, mystery and worlds unknown and you can use this wonderful colour to produce your own mystery and depth of character, keeping people wondering about who you are and what you are thinking.

Brown is associated with the ground, dirt and earth. It creates a feeling of comfort, sincerity and casualness. It is less blunt than black, and has a lot more versatility. A fabulous neutral colour that will team with pretty much any other tone on the colour wheel. You can take it from soft caramel through to dark bark with every hue in-between. Experiment and have fun – create dramatic lines or soft, buttery illusions – the choice is yours!

Black stands for the night, power, mystery and dignity. It actually isn't a colour at all as it is the absorption of all colour. It has been used in fashion for years as a staple of every wardrobe. Be careful though, it doesn't suit everyone. It can make some people appear drawn, pale and tired as it sucks all the colour from the face on the wrong person. Know how much you can wear and where on the body, sometimes away from the face is more flattering. Versatile, always in fashion, but don't rely on it. Be adventurous and play with other combinations.

White is symbolic of light. It stands for purity, cleanliness, innocence and goodness. Similar to black, it isn't actually a colour, simple the extreme end of black. Again, to be worn with caution as it can drain a face of colour and life. Usually white looks better against darker skins, very pale skins can looked almost invisible. Balance this starkness with warmth and depth of other colours and ensure you know if white or ivory are best for you.

So, take a good look at your wardrobe. How much colour do you have? A rainbow of fabulousness or rails of dark neutrals, mainly black? Be bold, be brave. Ditch the black and experiment with shades you have never worn before. Put combinations together that would make your grandmother faint with shock! Be bold, be dangerous, be unique! We have so many more options now than we've ever had. Frankly it would be rude not to wear colour!
